Daily Gratitude with Suzanne

Hello and a very good morning to you! It’s a Bank Holiday in the UK, a freebie day off for those of us who work out of the home, and Monday to the rest of us!
How are you today? Yes, yes, I know I checked in and asked that yesterday, but a whole lot can change in 24 hours.
Whoever you were and whatever you felt yesterday doesn’t have to be you or true today.
You have another 168 glorious hours ahead this week to be, do and feel any which way you want. Whatever is happening around you.
However today fits for size, I hope we can help you see that you are in charge of how you respond and how you feel ( yes, really!) and it starts right here, right now with a commitment to yourself.
And as we come to the end of the month of August ( seriously? How is it nearly September already?) I thought we’d reflect on what has happened in the past month so you can see that change is not only possible, it is happening.
But why, Auntie Suze? Why do we need to look back? We’re not going that way.
Whether it’s been a torrid or terrific 31 days, it’s always worth reflecting, because it can offer us insights, motivation and comfort to look at what has worked and what might not be as effective. And if you don’t feel August has any lessons for you, I’m sure one of your fellow gratitudents will share something that might spark a realisation or remind you that we’re don’t have to only recognise the sparkly diamonds or big ta da moments, it’s often the hidden gems that shine brighter and longer.
And according to Teresa Amabile, a Harvard researcher who came up with the Progress Principle, it’s the recognition of the small things that keep us on trackShe found that “of all the things that can boost emotions, motivation, and perceptions during a workday, the single most important is making progress in meaningful work.
And the more frequently people experience that sense of progress, the more likely they are to be creatively productive in the long run. Whether they are trying to solve a major scientific mystery or simply produce a high-quality product or service, everyday progress—even a small win—can make all the difference in how they feel and perform.”
And it’s the same for parenting ( and being a happy human.) While we understand we’re playing an infinite game, we also benefit from validation that we’re on the right track on a more regular basis. That’s why reflecting on the past day through the lens of gratitude is such a powerful tool for grounding us. We can highlight the small things – the smile, a moment of calm, enough time to have a shower without the house collapsing. We can feel that we’re still on track and be inspired to continue.
As humans, we have a bias towards negativity so we can often dwell on what was wrong rather than relishing what was right. Hence the need for daily connection here and now, for a review of the month of August.
The following questions are meant to spark thoughts, reflection and discussion with yourself and others. They’re not meant as an obligation so, a bit like an exam question, if it doesn’t come to you with a few moments consideration, move on.
I’d grab a cuppa, a pad and pen, and an extra portion of self kindness and compassion. If you find yourself only reflecting on the bad things that have come to pass this month, answer the simplest questions: what am I grateful for this month? Even if it’s ‘it’s over’ that’s ok. Share it with us and we’ll help you see that there are lessons and light in the darkest of times.
